Why you don't get adware on the Mac

One of the plagues of current PCs (the Windows kind) is the deluge of viruses, and assorted malware that assaults each and every machine that tries to connect to the rest of the world.
Each and every ? No, for there is a little group that still resists. Get a Mac, or install one of several Unix versions (Linux is the popular choice, but there are others such as the many BSD variants) on your PC, and you'll be safe.

Well I just got a Mac laptop, and I connect it regularly to the outside and just like with my Unix machines, no adware has invaded my disk. No scanners or firewalls required.

This doesn't actually mean that the Mac is as ad-free as my Linux desktops though. The thing is that the Mac comes with the adware preloaded. Run pretty much any of the iWhatever applications that come with it and it starts telling you about how much better your life would be with a .mac account would be (just $100 / year!). Of course when you look at the fine print, you realise that what a .mac account is is basically just email (just like gmail but with less space) and web space (just like your ISP but also with less space) and all for a measly $100 per year (just like, uh, well, no actually only Apple would sell something at that price). The fact that gmail (or any similar other webmail offer) is free and probably better and that you get web space for free as part of your ISP access is irrelevant. Or that if you spend some time to actually RTFM you can set it up at the end of your own ADSL link if you buy a domain for $10/year (or just get a free dynamic redirection thing).

Other iCrap will also insist that you get an iPod, or that you get your digital photos printed at whatever shop Apple selected… And the list goes on.

And that's the magic of the Mac. You don't even have to plug it into the network to get adware. How much more user friendly can it get ?

Mac sucks

Mac really sucks. Nuff said.

All systems suck

The trick is to find one that suckes a bit less... according to your views. If I had to make a choice between Mac OS and Windows purely for work, I'd certainly go with Mac OS. OTOH since I'm free to make my own decisions, I still prefer a pure Unix desktop.

To each his own. A little variety can't hurt anyway.
