On photography and why I'm back to it

A long time ago, I used to work in movies. I was assistant director, or production manager when working on ads, or I would shoot a number of short subjects when working in TV.
Unfortunately I'm definitely not a people's person. Translated to a film setting, this means that the artsy type soon gets on my nerves (because, no, you just can't watch a film with your sunglasses on... yes, even with a black turtleneck and champagne).

So anyway, at the time regularly I had to do a bit of computing to pay the bills (as I still do), and when I finally gave up on that, after a good 15 years and after having learned a lot, thankfully, I was left with an interesting dilemma. Should I try and make films myself (needs an awful lot of infrastructure) or should I switch to something else ? Which is how I ended up taking fewer pictures : just one once in a while instead of 24 (film) or 25 (video) per second. After all, it's pretty much the same thing and you don't have to bother with sound.

As an added bonus, when you take photos, you don't need much stuff. Granted you need a camera and a few lenses, although even a decent compact will do just fine if you're on a budget, but most of all you get to shoot whatever you like.

You can experiment, if you shoot digital, you can develop your photos yourself (even the colour ones). You can't really print them but you can look at reasonable facsimiles on the screen. All in all life is pretty good.
So now I take pictures. For some reason I'm terrible at taking pictures of people although the other primates usually come out ok. So do most animals. I really have to work on my macro skills (or lack thereof). But I'm getting there.

So there's a tiny image/photo section on this site.

However, I still dabble in computing. And since my pictures are all digital (I have taken chemical pictures for ages and have always hated it, I'll write about that later), and since I process them all in Linux, I registered linuxphoto.com. Maybe it'll turn into some kind of resource for us "free software" photographers. Or not. Who can tell. Anyway a this time it's not even up yet as I'm looking for the best way to set it up. I *hope* to make it into some sort of free for all resource so that any free software user / photographer (or anyone considering becoming free) can use it to find new tools, or tips or help.

But only time will tell. If you have suggestions, just shoot.
